NBA Suspends Players Following Heat-Pelicans Altercation

The NBA has handed down suspensions following an on-court altercation during the Miami Heat’s clash against the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday. Heat forward Jimmy Butler and Pelicans forward Naji Marshall were each suspended for one game without pay for instigating and engaging in the altercation, the league announced Sunday.

Additionally, Heat center Thomas Bryant and Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado received harsher penalties, being suspended for three games without pay for leaving the bench area during the altercation and participating in the fight. Heat forward Nikola Jovic was also suspended for one game without pay for leaving the bench area and entering the altercation.

The incident occurred less than a minute into the fourth quarter when the Heat’s Kevin Love committed a hard foul on the Pelicans’ Zion Williamson, sparking a series of skirmishes. Butler and Marshall were seen engaging in a physical altercation, while Alvarado and Bryant began fighting shortly after.

As a result of their actions, Alvarado, Bryant, Butler, and Marshall were all assessed technical fouls and ejected from the game.

Marshall served his suspension on Sunday night, while Alvarado’s suspension began as the Pelicans hosted the Chicago Bulls. Bryant will commence his suspension on Monday as the Heat take on the Sacramento Kings, with Butler and Jovic also serving their suspensions on the same night.

The NBA’s swift action underscores its commitment to maintaining player safety and upholding the integrity of the game, sending a clear message that on-court altercations will be met with serious consequences.
