The Maharlika Professional Basketball League (MPBL) is set to provide more job opportunities for former professional basketball players in the Philippines as it introduces new rules for its 2024 season.
In a significant change from previous seasons, the league has lifted its restriction on the number of ex-pros each team can hire. Previously limited to only seven professionals per team, now all 29 teams are permitted to sign as many former pro players as they desire, with lineups potentially expanding to include up to 22 players.
However, despite the relaxation of restrictions, there are still regulations in place to ensure the participation of homegrown talent. Each team must include at least three homegrown players in their roster, and only 15 players can be activated to play in each game.
The move comes as part of the league’s efforts to address unemployment among former professional basketball players in the country. By opening up more opportunities within the MPBL, the league aims to provide a platform for players to continue their careers and contribute to the growth of Philippine basketball.
